The Nursing Center

Nursing Staff

Residents of Shamokin, Coal Township, and surrounding communities now have the opportunity to receive a variety of nursing services. The Nursing Center at Shamokin Area Community Hospital was established in 1999 through a collaborative effort with Bloomsburg University. The center offers care directed toward health promotion, health education, and disease management. Programs are designed to meet the health needs of people in Shamokin and surrounding communities. A Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner staffs the Nursing Center. Nursing students from Bloomsburg University also participate in community health programs.

Ongoing services include:

  • Blood pressure screening
  • Cardiac risk screening
  • Stroke risk screening
  • Exercise counseling
  • Nutrition education and diet guidelines
  • Referrals to appropriate resources

The Nursing Center is pleased to announce a new program, Comprehensive Diabetes Patient Education and Disease Management. This program is designed to help persons with diabetes take charge of their health. The program offers education related to:

  • Disease process
  • Periodic screening tests
  • Monitoring in the home setting
  • Diabetes medications
  • Insulin administration
  • Acute complications
  • Chronic complications
  • Risk assessment
  • Meal planning

Family members are welcome to attend patient education sessions. Patient education is provided one on one or in group settings. The nurse collaborates with the patient's physician to assist the patient in reaching goals for treatment.
