Shamokin is located in Northcentral Pennsylvania and is the most populous area and the largest trading center within a 60-mile radius. The total population of Shamokin (Shamokin and Coal Township) is 19,106. The Shamokin area is served by a downtown business area of 35 blocks. Shamokin is located in the middle of many nearby cities, which offer opportunities for members of the community. Elysburg, Sunbury, Danville, Lewisburg, and Bloomsburg are a few of these cities that offer entertainment, employment and educational opportunities to Shamokin residents. Shamokin is also located within a 50-mile radius of 21 major universities including Bloomsburg University, Bucknell, Susquehanna, and many more.

Shamokin is famous for it's tradition in the Anthracite coal business. The area is still one of the largest suppliers of Anthracite in the nation, but industry is on the decline. Formerly a major industrial city, the area now thrives on mostly small business and restaurants, with the exception of a few major stores.
